Communications

The Communications Officer is primarily responsible for the setup of base and mobile communications during the
activity to insure that the Commander and his staff are in touch at all times.

The Communications Officer reports to the Executive Officer.

ILWG Spring Encampment's activities are spread over one of the larger military bases in the Midwest.  The processing
area is over 1/2 mile from the ships we are billeted in, the combat pool is nearly 1 mile away, and at times the
encampment cadre is broken up in multiple groups around the base.

To support the communications needs of the Commander and his staff, a full emergency-services level communications
base is set up inside the ship we are assigned, including a 30-foot, semi-permanent antenna, and all major staff postings
are assigned a VHF or ISR radio.  Whether it is point-to-point communications, message relay, or general announcements,
the Communications Officer and his staff are generally handling more traffic during Spring Encampment than a similar
base during a SAREx.

In addition, the Communications Officer may provide training to one or more members (cadet and senior) in basic
radio use, MRO taskings, or A/B-cut classes.

The Communications Officer is also responsible for assisting with audio visual setup in the classrooms when necessary,
as well as the use of Navy media equipment during the graduation.

Those interested in serving as Communications Officer should have at least a "B-Cut" radio card, working knowledge
of CAP communications procedures and regulations, and experience in setting up and maintaining CAP radio,  antennas
and related equipment.  Encampment experience is preferred, however interested parties which have solid communications
experience, especially in high-traffic ES operations, will be considered.

The majority of the participation occurs during the encampment, however some participation in the
planning process may be required, especially with discussions of available resources and base setup.
RST is required, and the Communications Officer should be be available for the entire encampment,
preferably for the entirety of both Fridays, as the base equipment takes time to setup and it is needed by
early afternoon.
